Frequently Asked Questions

Does the boat have a toilet?

Yes! Onyx is equipped with a composting toilet located in a private area beneath the helm, providing guests with a convenient washroom option while on the water.

Where do your tours depart from?

Our tours depart from Discovery Harbour Marina in Campbell River, British Columbia. Our vessel, Onyx, is located at Slip D52. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure.

What are the chances of seeing whales?

The waters surrounding Campbell River and the Discovery Islands offer excellent opportunities to encounter whales throughout our operating season. Humpback whales and Bigg's killer whales are frequently observed in the region. However, wildlife is unpredictable, and sightings can never be guaranteed.

What other wildlife might we see?

In addition to whales, we may encounter Pacific white-sided dolphins, harbour porpoises, Steller sea lions, harbour seals, bald eagles, and occasionally bears along the shoreline. Every tour is different, and wildlife sightings vary with the season and conditions.

How many guests are on each tour?

We specialize in small-group adventures, with a maximum of 8 guests per tour. This allows for a more personal experience, excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, and plenty of room to enjoy the scenery.

What type of boat will we be travelling on?

You'll be travelling aboard Onyx, our custom-built, 26-foot rigid inflatable boat (RIB). Recently extensively refitted, Onyx features new twin Mercury SeaPro engines, new Hypalon tubes, and upgraded Garmin navigation, radar, and marine safety electronics.

Are flotation suits provided?

Yes! We provide flotation suits for our guests. These offer additional protection from the elements while providing flotation in the event of an emergency.

What should I wear?

We recommend dressing in warm layers, even during summer. Temperatures on the water can be significantly cooler than on land. Wear comfortable clothing, closed-toe footwear, and bring a warm hat. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also recommended.

Are your tours suitable for photographers?

Absolutely! Our small-group tours provide excellent opportunities for wildlife photography. As an experienced wildlife photographer, your captain understands the importance of lighting, positioning, and allowing time to observe natural wildlife behaviour. Both professional cameras and smartphones are welcome.

Do I need photography equipment to join a tour?

Not at all! Our whale watching and wildlife tours are designed for everyone. Whether you're an experienced photographer or simply want to enjoy seeing wildlife in its natural habitat, you're welcome aboard.

Are food and drinks provided?

Food and refreshments vary depending on the tour selected. Please review your specific tour description for details on what's included. Guests are welcome to bring additional snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Your safety and comfort are our priorities. Tours are weather-dependent, and we continuously monitor marine forecasts and local conditions. If conditions are unsuitable for safe operation, we may reschedule or cancel your tour. If we cancel due to weather, you'll be offered an alternative date or a refund in accordance with our booking policy.

Will I get seasick?

Our tours operate in a variety of coastal waterways, including areas that are often sheltered. However, ocean conditions can change, and some guests may experience motion sickness. If you're prone to seasickness, we recommend speaking with your pharmacist about preventative options before your tour.

Are your tours wheelchair accessible?

Due to the design of our rigid inflatable vessel, Onyx is not wheelchair accessible. Guests must be able to step over the inflatable tubes to board and disembark, with assistance where appropriate. Please contact us before booking if you have mobility concerns so we can discuss your individual needs.

Are children welcome?

Families are welcome aboard, provided children can safely board the vessel and wear the required safety equipment. Please contact us before booking with your children's ages so we can confirm suitability.

Can we book a private tour?

Absolutely! We offer private wildlife tours and charters for families, friends, photographers, and small groups. Private charters provide greater flexibility and allow us to tailor the experience to your interests, subject to weather, wildlife conditions, and operational requirements.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking as early as possible, particularly during the busy summer months. With limited seating on each departure, popular dates can fill quickly.

Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?

No. All wildlife we encounter is wild and free-roaming. We follow responsible wildlife viewing practices and applicable regulations, always prioritizing the wellbeing of the animals. While we make every effort to provide memorable wildlife encounters, sightings of specific species cannot be guaranteed.
