Experience one of Vancouver Island's most spectacular seasonal wildlife events as the annual Pacific herring spawn brings an incredible abundance of marine life to our coastal waters.

Each spring, massive schools of Pacific herring gather to spawn, attracting an extraordinary variety of predators. Steller sea lions, harbour seals, bald eagles, seabirds, and occasionally whales converge on these rich feeding grounds, creating exciting opportunities to witness natural wildlife behaviour.

During the height of the spawn, coastal waters can transform into brilliant shades of turquoise as herring release their milt, creating a remarkable natural spectacle. Above and below the surface, the activity can be extraordinary, with diving birds, feeding sea lions, and wildlife gathering to take advantage of this seasonal abundance.

Departing from Comox, British Columbia, aboard Onyx, our small-group tours explore the surrounding coastal waters in search of this incredible spring wildlife activity. Led by an experienced wildlife guide and certified marine naturalist, these adventures offer excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography, and learning about the important role Pacific herring play in our marine ecosystem.

Every spring brings something different, and the timing and intensity of the herring spawn vary with natural conditions. Wildlife encounters are never guaranteed, but witnessing this seasonal event can be one of the most memorable experiences on Vancouver Island.
